Scratching an Itch

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

Over the last several years, I’ve grown an interest in how small businesses start and how they grow.  One of the most common phrases I heard from successful entrepreneurs was to “scratch your own itch.”  This means that when you start a business, don’t do it simply because someone says the market is good or because you think you have a cool idea.

Find a genuine problem that you have in your own life and solve it.

That’s what we’ve done here at Darby Software.  We tried for months to find software to support the inventory needs of a home staging business some of us own but we found that most software fell short in at least one of three categories:

  1. Too Expensive
  2. Too Complicated
  3. Not the Right Features

Because some of us had a background in software development we decided to build our own.  As we created it for our own purposes we heard from many other entrepreneurs that they have had similar experiences with inventory software so we’ve decided to build a business out of those frustrations.

We found our itch.  Now we’re scratching.

A Note From Darby

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

You people have me busy 24/7 and I couldn’t be happier!  My job is great; helping all of you small to medium sized business owners keep track of what you have, where things are, how much you’ve spent on things, and how much folks are spending with you. That’s what I exist for! (not to mention all the other little tasks you are having me do.)  Thank you for allowing me to do what I’m best at.  It’s exciting to hear from so many of you that with me around, you have more time to  attend to other things in your life and business.

As you know from working with me, precision and simplicity although somewhat opposites, are very important to me.  My goal is to be easy to work with, and absolutely perfect in keeping track of your things.  Please let me know if there are areas I need to work on and I’ll get started on that right away.  Conversely, I sure do like compliments so keep ‘em coming!

You can always reach me right here, I look forward to hearing from you soon.
